The "Manga CPO" was established in Fukuoka to help search for the world's next generation of creative individuals. The "MCPO AWARD 2017" put a call out to manga artists and illustrators across the globe. A public screening of applicants work was held on the 16th April. 5,534 pieces were received from across the globe! Out of that number, 58 illustrations and 20 pieces of manga were chosen and advanced to the final selection stage. The special judging panel included Fukuoka natives Tochi Ueyama, Suu Minazuki, and Takahiro Seguchi on the manga section, while Haruhiko Mikimoto and Reine Hibiki were on the illustration section.
