My Kawaii 1. 私なりの“キャラクター”を演じます
I've always loved cosplay and recently have become hooked on what is known as "shiro-nuri" (the art of painting oneself white). Like the Geisha of old Japan, I paint myself a pure white.
With all the knowledge I've accumulated thus far about make-up, I like to use it to transform myself and play different characters. For example, I'll dress up as European dolls or leading characters from fairy tales. I also try to create accessories for my costume that I feel will fit the character.
Sometimes I will go out like this, and as I walk down the street I can see the alarmed look that cross people's faces as I pass by them. I've been grappling with this issue recently and have been trying to brainstorm ways on how to get people more accustomed to this tradition so they will not be so surprised. I want more people to understand the "shiro-nuri" culture.
