#04 Yame (八女) – A town thriving on tradition, sake breweries and tea

Yame is a town 50km south of Fukuoka city. At the center of Yame is a place called Yame-fukushima, named after the Fukushima Castle that was built there in 1587.
Yame is one of the towns that prospered in the Chikugo region and is well known for its Japanese paper, lanterns, Buddhist altars, and tea. The stores that dealt in these various specialty products in the Yame-fukushima area were called “machiya” (merchant townhouses). Back then, the walls of these machiya were covered with mud to prevent fires. They look like the mud-wall houses that you see in Thailand, only the ones in Yame serve a different purpose (fire proofing). The 130 or so white plaster walled houses were built in the 19th century and some are still used as restaurants, cafes and craft studios today. It’s a fairly small town, so getting around on foot is a breeze.
