Inside the musical-comedy drag show spectacular "Anmitsu Hime" (2/13)
All the performers introduced themselves and just as I thought the show was about to start they turned the spotlight on the audience members and let fire at them with their jokes. I happened to be the recipient of one of those jokes even (lol). Then the lights dimmed and the show began…
The moment the curtain rose I couldn’t help but let out a gasp of amazement at the stage and costumes on display before me. The sharp dance moves, the expressions on their faces – it was an impeccable performance! Seeing the passion that this theatre troupe clearly had for their jobs made me feel a little envious even.

The first musical number ended and the first comedy routine began. Be warned though, for this routine also, the audience is called upon for participation. (I was hoping they would call me up to the stage but that didn’t happen unfortunately ㅠ.ㅠ)
The routines chop and change from musical to comedy, one after the other, and with a variety of set changes and costume changes it really is a feast for the ears and the eyes.
The shocks and the laughs kept coming and before I knew it an hour had passed just like that.

Before coming to Japan I didn’t have a very positive image of drag queens or transvestites and thought they were slightly disturbing. But after attending “Anmitsu Hime” my opinion has changed completely. I even found myself admiring them as performers.
For overseas visitors, you’ll need to have some understanding of Japanese to be able to understand the comedy routines, but that being said, there’s still plenty to enjoy from this show even if you can’t speak the language (just use your imagination for the speaking parts :P ) Also, the stage routines and costumes change every month, so if you need a break from work, etc., a visit once a month might be a good way to relieve some of that pent up stress! (Who knows, you might even see me up there on stage next time ^^;;)
