The Beginner’s Guide to VOCALOID(2/2)

      |  Next

Fan Produced! The VOCALOID Popularity is Ever-Growing

As more and more creators post their works on easily accessible and free-to-view sites like Nico Nico Douga and YouTube™, the more fans VOCALOID continues to draw. In addition to this, fans who sing along to and record their own performances to the VOCALOID songs (a genre in Nico Douga known as "utattemita") or even choreographed and recorded their own dance steps to the songs (another genre in Nico Douga referred to as "odottemita") created even further fanfare for the series.

From 2D to Reality - The VOCALOID Boom is Everywhere

The virtual idols have even evolved from 2D (virtual space) to 3D (reality), expanding their range of influence. The most obvious example of this is music CDs. The most popular songs posted on video streaming sites have been compiled into compilation albums, one such album is “EXIT TUNES PRESENTS Vocalogenesis feat. Hatsune Miku” which even managed to take out the top spot on Japan’s Oricon music chart at the end of May 2010.

VOCALOID albums have since continued to rank on hit music charts resulting in the creation of a new “VOCALOID” genre. On March 9, 2010 (labeled the Day of Miku), Hatsune Miku performed in her own solo concert to a sell out crowd at ZEPP Tokyo. Miku fever then went intercontinental with another concert being held in Los Angeles (USA) in July 2011.

Even the big name corporations are beginning to take notice of the VOCALOID craze; Toyota employing Hatsune Miku into one of their recent commercials for the US Carolla.

VOCALOID is no longer regarded as just amusement for otakus. The name “Hatsune Miku” is taken from a Japanese phrase meaning “the first sound from the future.” But her sounds are not from the future, they are being resonated throughout the world right now! It has only been 7 years since the creation of the first VOCALOID. With such a shallow history VOCALOID is sure to evolve even further, in ways we probably can’t even imagine at this point in time. The age of VOCALOID is now and it’s only going to get bigger!
