Q and A

■Name qr1o (user name)
■Occupation Web Consultant
■Otaku History 10 years
■Girlfriend - Y/N? No
■If no, for how long? 1 month
■Favorite genre Anime (late night anime)
■Character you'd take for a wife? Rei Ayanami (Evangelion)
■Reason for becoming otaku? I think “Neon Genesis: Evangelion” was probably the turning point. It’s the plug-suits that did it for me. There was something so appealing about the contrast between the young age of the characters and the sexiness of the plug-suits. And then after making my way through the “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” series I began to watch anime a lot more.
■What are your thoughts on the latest otaku boom?
If there are more people in the world who pick up an interest in anime or manga I’m happy.
■Site you frequent most
Hatena Bookmark – Popular Entries
■Word or phrase of the moment
As a suffix to sentences I tend to say “~da o” a lot. And also, “tutturuu” (an onomatopoeic word: generally used as an expression of excitement).
■What are you hooked on at the moment?
Anime – “Regular Life” (Nichijou). It’s so good to just have it playing in the background while doing something else. In doing so, I tend to end up watching the same episodes over and over again.
Also, “Steins; Gate.” It has completed unexpected plot turns and I really like the otaku nature of the characters. I picked up “tutturuu” from Mayushi and “~da o” from Daru in the series.
Manga – “Yowamushi Pedaru.” I bought a cross-country bike to ride to work everyday so I wondered if there wasn’t a manga about bicycles out there and this is what I found. It has a similar feel to “Slam Dunk” and is really hard to put down.
■The next thing you want to buy?
A low table. Whenever friends come round I always think it would be good if I had a table for drinks and snacks, etc. I could have a few figurines and manga sitting there for when I just want to kick back on the lounge and relax…
■How much have you invested so far?
Probably about 10,000,000 Yen, (approx. $100,000) but I couldn’t say exactly.
■What does being an otaku mean to you?
An opportunity to communicate.
■How do you budget your monthly earnings?
Living expenses 80%
Otaku goods 20%
■Last word
I look forward to making more and more friends who share an interest in manga and anime!
