Rei of the Cross
I asked a friend of mine from Japan to get it for me (from an ordinary Japanese mail-order site). It’s nothing unusual or special but after a two year long battle with my mother, it became the first figurine I truly owned. It is more a symbol of victory for me than anything.
In high school, I remember buying a figurine and my mother yelled at me saying, “How dare you buy something as useless as this. You can’t even eat it – it’s a waste of money!” For the two years prior to this, I had to follow and was heavily constricted by my mother’s “Play rules.” There were so many regulations! For example, she would set a bar on the amount of money I was allowed to spend and also limit me to buying only one figurine per year. Now that I've found a part-time job I am finally free!
Our 20th otaku, despite being strictly bound by the rules set my his mother and even being forced to donate 600-700 books to the library, this persistent young man slowly and painstakingly collects what he likes. At one stage in our interview he even told me a story about how he searched all the figurine shops in the entire Taiwan in search of a specific figurine and I could feel his passion as a dedicated otaku. Even if you are living at home with your parents, why not have a bit of courage and try to start up your very own otaku room?
