POWER OF GIRLS from TOKYO Vol.6 maki from Angelic Pretty(2/2)

  |  Next
Taguchi Maki : How long have you been working this job for?

maki : It’s been about 10 years now. I am currently in charge of the “Angelic Pretty” DM illustrations - mainly illustration for clothes and sometimes also the accessories and such that are associated with it. I also design bags.

Taguchi Maki : Do you have a girl first and draw to match her look or do you start with an image and draw from that?

maki : With clothes, I illustrate first and then adjust that look to fit the world and think up the design. I oftentimes get my inspiration from looking at confectionary or on my business travels to Paris or San Francisco (where we also have “Angelic Pretty” shops). I’ve come across many sweets with cute decorations, the likes of which I have never seen in Japan and when I see such adorable, decorated cakes and candies I am sometimes very impressed and inspired!

Taguchi Maki : After this, what would you -- as an individual illustrator -- want to do with the brand?

maki : To a great extent what I want to do and what the company wants to do are closely linked and would like to introduce to the world outside of Japan that of Lolita fashion, which has become such a big part of our domestic fashion culture. That is why I think it would be great if we started actively creating events and such overseas. In addition to this, I would definitely want to continue creating kawaii accessories and things.

Taguchi Maki : When you were overseas was there anything in particular that you felt?

maki : Initially, I was worried about whether or not Lolita fashion would be understood by the people there; however, Parisian and San Francisco branches have been opened and I’m happy to say that we will be seeing more and more Lolita girls making their way out there. It is an honor to see that the small facet of Japanese culture has been taken in. Lolita from overseas are also coming out with their own unique ideas and I hope that it will continue to spread!

Taguchi Maki : Is there any conversation in particular that you had with the people from those areas that really left an impression on you?

maki : It was funny to find that the girls there were able to understand the word “kawaii.” I thought it was fabulous that instead of having to say “cute” they could already comprehend what I was trying to say when I used the word “kawaii.”

Taguchi Maki : Is there anything you would personally want to draw?

maki : Up until now all of my work has mostly revolved around “Pretty” and I would, in fact, like to try making something more adult-like fitting for my age. This time, I tried for a more adult-like theme based upon an illustration I had previously come across of a black cat in a field of lavenders. Even now, should you want to see it, if you glace upwards, it displayed in one of the rooms on the first floor.

Taguchi Maki : Surely, among those that have stood by and been long-term fans of the “Angelic Pretty” industry some will definitely be interested?

maki : I have a lot of fans who have grown old with me and have the same mindset. Even as adults if we can wear something kawaii, we are happy and hope to continue to do so!

Along with her brand, we see maki blossom. Spreading the word of not only her “Angelic Pretty” brand, with her clothes she also continues to fulfill the dreams of Lolita girls from all around the world. While wearing “Angelic Pretty” dresses with a gleam in their eyes, these Lolita girls are the dawn of a new culture. From now until forever, maki will undoubtedly never forget to continue to impress us with her ingenuity and new ways to incorporate the concept of “kawaii.”

Angelic Pretty

Angelic Pretty is Japan’s representative brand of Lolita fashion. Opening under the name “Pretty” as a select shop in 1979 in Harajuku’s La Foret, Angelic Pretty re-opened along with the La Foret renewal, under its current name. In 2007, it joined the JAPAN EXPO La Foret Harajuku collection and opened branches in both Paris and San Francisco. ”Angelic Pretty” revolves around the idea of “kawaii” clothes that look like they could be fit for a princess with beautiful lace, ribbons, and frills straight from storybooks that young children read. It’s a brand that was designed for girls who never forget to dream and want to remain forever kawaii.
