Interview Now - Tochi Ueyama, Haruhiko Mikimoto, Takahiro Seguchi, Koushi Rikudou, Eisaku Kubonouchi, Makoto Kaneuji (Manga CPO) -(2/3)

MCPO AWARD 2018

There's still so much more that I want to draw!

ab: Artists from Fukuoka (Mr. Ueyama, Mr. Seguchi, and Mr. Rikudou) often feature local places in their work. Are there any locations within the prefecture that you would like to draw in the future?
MCPO AWARD 2018
Kubonouchi: This is the second time I have been to Fukuoka! I have not really had the chance to do any sightseeing, so I am not sure about the different parts of Fukuoka, but I absolutely love "motsunabe" (Fukuoka-style hotpot made with tripe or offal). I feel like I am going to put on weight if I spend lots of time in Fukuoka (lol)!

Ueyama: There are different types of motsunabe. There's soy sauce, miso, and also the sukiyaki style!

Kubonouchi: Oh really!? I will have to look into this in more detail!

Ueyama: The places I have drawn in "Cooking Papa" have been inspired by Fukuoka. The background or scenery in the introductory frame is usually based on Fukuoka. But I have done around 1,400 editions, so I have drawn that many locations in Fukuoka (lol).
I may have already exhausted all of them (lol)! But I am pretty sure there are still lots of interesting places to feature. I can change my viewpoint or perspective, which can offer a completely new approach for lots of different places. There's still so much more that I want to draw!

Mikimoto: I have been to Fukuoka several times, but I have not done much sightseeing, as I usually go out for a drink or to get something to eat! Oh, Yanagawa is in Fukuoka, right? I'm really interested in Yanagawa. I would love to ride one of the boats on the canal and eat some tasty unagi eel. I can't help thinking about gourmet food (lol).

Seguchi: In terms of foods, I drew and featured some Fukuoka places in the manga I am currently working on. Next time I would like to depict Nakasu and shops that have women inside (lol)!

Rikudou: Before I create a new piece of work, I go around taking photographs of places around Fukuoka Prefecture looking for inspiration. I also take down names of memorable characters from local places. I really owe a lot to the local areas I visit. I do not know how many times I have drawn scenes that feature Fukuoka Tower or the sea around Momochi. I haven't drawn so many places in the west and south. So, I would like to go out and take some photos of sites located outside the main urban areas.

ab: We're looking forward to seeing all your depictions of Fukuoka!

I sometimes use passersby as inspiration!

MCPO AWARD 2018
ab: When you create a character, do you ever base aspects of their appearance or personality on people you know?

Ueyama: I tend to create characters that resemble certain people. Personally, I often borrow details and characteristics from people around me.

ab: Do you let the people know?! As a reader, I would be pretty happy if I found out that a character based on me was going to appear in a story!

Ueyama: I have told people in the past. I sometimes use passersby as inspiration! When I see a person with a really great or memorable face, I start imagining who they are while I am drawing. I almost arbitrarily attribute imaginary characteristics to them, like "that person must have a certain type of personality, so I will depict them in this sort of way." At those kinds of times, I probably wouldn't say "hello, is it alright if I draw you?"(lol) Because I do lots sketches, but I do not always use them in manga.

Rikudou: Even though it is only fiction... It's great if the person ends up as a good character, but if they are the villain in the story, that's a problem (lol)! In that case, you really shouldn't tell them that their personality was the inspiration for an evil character (lol)!

Seguchi: When that happens... Even if somebody I know has been used as the base for a character, I just kind of feign ignorance (lol)!
