#5 DIY Doll Clothing – A Very Creative Otaku Wife(3/3)

Most prized possession

otaku_otakara05.jpg

The clothes and accessories are all hand-made but the head was painted by a specialist. I got his contact from a friend and begged him to help out. I even took a short course at a university to learn how to make books (an accessory for this particular doll). The university professor said he couldn’t believe I actually went to that much trouble for a doll (lol). It took a lot of trial and error and about 5 years from when I had the idea to complete it. The lining on the sleeves was particularly difficult to get right.

On the day of the interview Miko’s husband was at work so we didn’t get to speak with him unfortunately, but she did say that he too doesn’t think of himself as an otaku (lol). Apparently, he says that making models is just a boyish hobby, but from what we heard he sounds rather passionate about what he does too. It’s great that this couple share a passion for the same hobby of craftsmanship. We’re a culture of consumers that buys everything we need, so it must feel really good to not have to rely on others to make every single thing but to have the ability and skill to make things for yourself as well.
We’ve now reached 3,150,500 Yen!! Please, keep your applications coming!
