Tenjin Sweets and Treats Special!(2/2)

Horaku Manjuu
It’s fun to find these unique treats like the “Mutsugoro Manjuu” but that doesn’t mean you should go forgetting about the traditional manjuu! The next shop I want to introduce you to is a well-established name in the manjuu world – “Horaku Manjuu.” Horaku manjuu are a traditional round manjuu made with pure Japanese honey. You can find the store located on the second basement floor (B2) of the Iwataya department store in Tenjin.

★ People are lined up even at lunch time. Better get in line then!

★ The manjuu are bursting with your choice of white or red bean jam!
The ‘anko’ used in Horaku Manjuu’s fillings is slow-cooked and gradually sweetened with sugar. The recipe has been used for generations and the taste is certainly a cut above. They also use a special wrapping paper that absorbs the steam and protects the soft texture of the manjuu dough. Most importantly, one Horaku manjuu will only set you back 90 Yen!
Only in Fukuoka doughnuts!
Just as my sweets tour was coming to an end another asianbeat staff member told me about a certain brand of doughnuts that you can only get at convenience stores and super markets in Fukuoka prefecture. I was feeling pretty full at this point but when it comes to sweets I never know when to stop, so in search of said doughnuts I went!
This is them: “Manhattan” brand doughnuts! They come in chocolate and strawberry and both cost only 110 Yen! The combination of the light, fluffiness of the dough and the crunch of the chocolate sprinkled over the top is heaven. But this is one calorie heavy treat so I probably wouldn’t recommend it to any girls currently trying to shed a few pounds. Otherwise, add it to your list of things to eat if you ever happen to come to Fukuoka!

Well, it’s certainly been one indulgent day! Sure it’s been a calorie overload but as long as I get to introduce everyone to some of the best and most affordable delicacies that Fukuoka has to offer then I couldn’t be happier.(*^__^*)
I hope you enjoyed my Tenjin sweets and treats special! Now you’ll know where to go the next time you’re wandering around Tenjin, looking for a quick bite to satisfy that sweet tooth!
