#7 “I Wanted to Stay in Sao Paulo!” Japanese Idol Dives Headfirst into Anime Event, Even Gets her First Taste of Samba!(2/3)

Kikkawa started out as a member of Hello Pro Egg, but unlike other members from the same year, like the girls who now form the groups THE Possible and Up Up Girls (Kari), Kikkawa rarely gets the chance to dance at all during her live performances.
But the people of Brazil reminded her of how fun dance can be.
“A lot of people came to see me perform. All the passionate fans who had been waiting all this time for me to visit them, and the people who were just hearing me for the first time, too, they all really just cut loose and enjoyed themselves.”
Kikkawa also tried out what Portuguese she knew when she was emceeing.
“There are certain things to say to get the crowd fired up, like “Sing it louder!” and I try to prepare myself so that I can scream out these words in the local language without having to look at the cue cards when I’m on stage.”

When we Japanese go to see international artists perform in Japan, we immediately feel closer to the artist when they say something to us in Japanese, even if it’s just a single word. Overseas fans want to hear Japanese songs sung as they are, in Japanese, but with just a little effort on the communication front like this, we can break down barriers and get through to each other.
