Is this lover’s talk? No, it’s about a cell phone. It’s what EVA fans have been waiting for all this time – the EVA cell phone. The good news arrived on May 19, 2009 when NTT announced its 2009 summer range of new cell phone models. The production was top secret (very EVA-like) and the surprise Evangelion SH-06A NERV cell phone was unveiled. By June 5, 2009 20,000 pre-sale orders had been placed (sale date was July 25).

The design and materials, installed contents and advanced specs were made to tickle the fancy of EVA fans. Furthermore, the same design cell phone appears in the movie. They were expecting good sales, but at the national network of DOCOMO phone shops and the official Evangelion Online Store 20,000 phones sold out in just five hours. That’s one order ever second!

The higher than expected volume of orders caused the computer system to overload. Although the phones were expensive at ￥90,000 each they sold out in an instant. There is no doubting the love EVA fans have.

The cell phone appears in the movie Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance so keep an eye out for it.
