There are a few hundred years of history preserved in this townscape. They’re currently building a school in the center, but around the area you can find the ruins of a castle that once stood here, including stone stairways and torii gates that are still standing to this day. Cherry blossom trees also line the path to the castle ruins, so it’s bound to be a beautiful site come spring.
Going from the castle site out into the surrounding town, most of the old wooden houses along the streets have since been converted into shops for tourists, so there are plenty of places to stop and check out as you enjoy your walk through the town. One feature of this town is the streamlet that still runs down the sides of the houses to this day. Two shops that you simply must visit when you stop by Akizuki, though, are the washi (Japanese paper) store and the wagashi (Japanese-style confectionary) store.
