Interview Now - 西元祐貴 (Yu-ki Nishimoto) -(2/2)

Yu-ki Nishimoto

I think it would be great to produce artwork that is representative of the whole of Asia

ab: This exhibition features around 100 pieces of your artwork. Are there any creations that you are particularly fond of or feel a strong emotional attachment to?

Yu-ki NishimotoDuring the private viewing, a TV crew broadcast Nishimoto painting a huge dragon head live. (*The body was painted inside Fukuoka Yahuoku! Dome at a previous date.)

Nishimoto: The huge 30-meter "dragon" that I painted inside the Fukuoka Dome is the largest piece of artwork that I have created. People would not have been able to see a piece of work this large in scale if the museum was not as big as this. I think this will be one of the highlights of the exhibition.
Yu-ki Nishimoto Hon-ryuHere is Nishimoto standing in front of his huge creation "Hon-ryu," which is over 30-meters long when put together. (*Only a section of the artwork is visible in the photograph)

ab: Finally, do you have a message for our asianbeat readers both at home and abroad?

Nishimoto: Ink painting originates from Tang Dynasty China. Given its history, I think it would be great to produce artwork that is representative of the whole of Asia.

I think because I am self-taught, I'm not really restricted to traditional forms of ink painting. Instead, I want to try and create a new style of sumi-e painting. I have been exploring how to create ink-based artwork using techniques that have not yet been used. It would be wonderful if the viewers pick-up on these aspects of my work.
